The 1991 Ryder Cup on the resort's famed Ocean Course essentially put Kiawah Island on the map, and the 20 PGA Championships will keep it there. A pair of high-end courses - Cassique of the Kiawah Island Club and the Oak Point Golf Course at Kiawah Island Golf Resort, purchased by the resort years ago - are located just off island. Two entities essentially share the island: Kiawah Partners, the developer of Kiawah Island Real Estate that includes the Kiawah Island Club, a private club with some of the best facilities in golf, and Kiawah Island Golf Resort, the five-star golf destination home to five courses. Kiawah Island is essentially a giant 10,000-acre gated community that's part natural preserve and part vacation playground with 10 miles of magnificent beach. It's a haven for athletes, celebrities and CEO types who want to escape from their hectic lives, either for a week on vacation or on a regular basis when they buy a second (or third) home.
